American Friends of Chartres expresses its gratitude to all US members of the military who fought for the Liberation of France 80 years ago. AFC honors, in particular, the memory of Colonel Welborn Griffith who saved Chartres Cathedral from potential destruction on August 16, 1944, and lost his life in an ambush a few hours later. AFC also honors the memory of Sgt Eugene Schulz, Colonel Griffith’s assistant, who participated in the liberation of the city of Chartres on August 25th and was honored by the French Government with the Legion of Honor, in 2019. Read more about Sgt Eugene Schulz here.
