CIV and AFC have partnered to launch a project to create an artificial intelligence application for reading Chartres stained-glass windows, bringing together stained glass and new technologies.
For centuries, the cathedral’s stained-glass windows have amazed visitors. We’ve forgotten how revolutionary they were when they were first made. Stained-glass windows let light through and tell stories. They are the screens of past centuries, hence the name of the project: “From Stained-Glass Windows to Screen”.
Visitors to the cathedral will be able to use an application, based on artificial intelligence, enabling face-recognition of the stained-glass windows to obtain full explanations of each of their components. This application will be a world first in the field of culture, with the aim of bridging the gap between historic knowledge and the search for meaning by younger generations.
