Lecture 5: WWII and the compelling power of friendship

With Dave and Paul Schulz and Dominique Lallement

The fifth lecture brings the cathedral forward in time, from WWII to today. Mike reminds us of how vulnerable cathedrals in France have been in times of upheaval and war. He then recounts the liberation of France in 1944, and Chartres in particular where Colonel Griffith’s bravery resulted in preserving the cathedral. Paul and David Schulz talk about their father, Eugene Schulz, who as the Colonel’s secretary was part of the saving of the cathedral and Dominique Lallement describes how American Friends of Chartres was founded and has continued to create connections between France and America, tie friendships and expand knowledge, to which the town’s 75th celebration of the liberation in September 2019  remains strong testimony.
