In this lecture held on May 14, 2024, Professors Robert Bork and Ellen Shortell explore the geometric principles that went into the precise design and building of the Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral. Through the use of drawings created with] laser-scanning technology, Bork and Shortell highlight astonishing details in the cathedral’s proportions and architectural features . Unlike previous writers on geometric architecture, Bork carefully applies his analyses to the detailed drawings, combining historical, geometric, and architectural knowledge to suggest that perhaps the originally intended design of the cathedral may have been changed during construction to the building we see standing in Chartres today.
