January 31st 2025: Virginia Raguin : The Illuminated Window book launch at AFDC

On 31st January 2025, American Friends of Chartres invited distinguished art historian Virginia Raguin for a presentation on the artistic significance of Chartres Cathedral’s stained-glass windows, in collaboration with and hosted by Alliance Française of Washington, DC. Drawing from her latest book, The Illuminated Window, Virginia Raguin explored how these medieval masterpieces continue to inspire and inform the contemporary understanding of stained-glass.

During her presentation, Raguin examined the rich iconography and craftsmanship of Chartres’ renowned stained glass, discussing the role of donors and the largely de-bunked claim that professional groups would have funded the windows’ production.

Beyond Chartres, Raguin also traced the broader evolution of stained glass, illustrating how artistic techniques and purposes changed over centuries. She discussed its development from medieval narratives to Renaissance humanism, the revival of stained glass in the Gothic Revival movement, and finally, its reinterpretation in the work of artists like Louis Tiffany and Frank Lloyd Wright. This historical perspective underscored stained glass not only as a medieval art form but as a continuously evolving medium that remains relevant in both sacred and secular spaces, offering a compelling perspective on the enduring power of light, color, and storytelling.

The talk, followed by an engaging Q&A, provided attendees with a deeper appreciation for Chartres’ artistic legacy and the ongoing work to conserve its treasures.

Copies of The Illuminated Window were available for purchase through Bonjour Books, which sold out completely. Virginia Raguin graciously signed each one, engaging warmly with guests. Following the presentation, Alliance Française provided a generous reception, allowing attendees to continue discussions in a convivial setting.

The evening was a remarkable success, reflecting the deep appreciation for stained glass and the cultural legacy of Chartres among the Washington, DC community.
