OUR MISSION

The mission of American Friends of Chartres is to raise awareness in the United States of Chartres Cathedral and its unique history, sculpture, stained glass, and architecture and their conservation needs. AFC raises funds to finance restoration of the magnificent stained-glass windows, as well as sculptures and seeks to establish educational exchange programs in the field of historic glass, to strengthen ties between the American and French cultural communities, and to enhance relations between the United States and France.

To achieve these goals, American Friends of Chartres will:

  • Sponsor projects to specifically preserve stained-glass windows and sculptures in Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral, work which will be done in consultation with, and with the agreement of, the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Culture -DRAC Centre Val-de-Loire, and our affiliate organization Chartres, Sanctuaire du Monde.

  • Sponsor student exchanges between France and the U.S. in the field of historic stained glass and medieval art and history.

  • Foster the vibrancy of the cathedral through educational and cultural events.
