DONATE today - be the change
Notre-Dame de Chartres exemplifies a long line of donors and patrons. After the fire of 1020 which destroyed the wood church that Fulbert found when he arrived in Chartres, he appealed to his king, Robert II, called ‘the Pious’ and his friends the Duke of Aquitaine, the Duke of Brittany and others, to help him finance the reconstruction of the church. The tradition of sponsors and donors has never ceased. The blazons of rich donors are present in the stained glass as well as the depictions of the trade guilds such as the bakers’, whose contributions were encouraged.

On 10 June 1194, a great fire grievously damaged the Romanesque cathedral of Chartres that had been built by Bishop Fulbert. In an inspired effort from the entire citizenry of Chartres, the Cathedral was rebuilt as the Gothic masterpiece that we see today. Every man, woman and child joined to help with the labor, and those who could donated funds for the windows and sculptures.
In the 21st C., a donors’ path leading to the Chapel St Piat recognizes the generosity of all donors, individuals and corporations, that contribute to the conservation of the cathedral.
Join them by donating to the great cause of restoring and preserving this peerless artistic treasure.
