January 23rd 2025: Madeline Caviness Honored as Officière des Arts at des Lettres

On January 23, 2025, renowned art historian Professor Emeritus Madeline Caviness was awarded the prestigious Officière des Arts et des Lettres medal, by M. Mustafa Soykurt, Consul General of France in Boston. This honor, bestowed by the French government, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and humanities, particularly in promoting French culture and heritage. The ceremony took place at the French Consulate General in Boston.

Caviness, a distinguished scholar of medieval stained glass, has devoted a significant part of her career to the study of Medieval History, including that of Gothic Art from Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral. Her pioneering research has deepened understanding of the artistic, historical, and theological significance of stained-glass windows, shedding new light on their role in medieval society. She has also played a key role in advocating for the conservation of historic stained glass, ensuring that these masterpieces continue to inspire future generations.

The ceremony in Boston was attended by American Friends of Chartres trustees, colleagues, students, and admirers of Caviness’s work who were proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition. In accepting the award, Caviness spoke of her lifelong passion for medieval art and her commitment to fostering transatlantic and international collaboration in the preservation of France’s artistic heritage. Madeline stressed her immense gratitude for France’s contribution to her early education on medieval glass and for the French scholars who enabled her to launch her career.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered for a celebratory dinner offered by AFC at Henrietta’s Table, where they toasted Caviness’s achievements and reflected on her enduring contributions to the field.
