On this Veterans’ Day, November 11th, 2022, AFC honors the memory of Colonel Welborn Griffith and Eugene Schulz

Eugene Schulz, 1923- 2022, served as a Staff Sergeant assigned to Colonel Welborn Griffith, in the XX Corps Headquarters attached to General Patton’s Third army. He landed on Utah Beach in Normandy on D+46 (July 22, 1944) on his 21st birthday, and participated in the liberation of Chartres in August, 1944. The French government awarded Schulz the medal of Chevalier (Knight) in the Legion of Honor, France’s highest honor for merit, for his service to save France and Western Europe during the Second World War. 

Eugene Schulz devoted much of his life to educating people, especially school children, about his war experience, including in the liberation of Chartres. He also became a spokesman for the mission of American Friends of Chartres in promoting the preservation of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Chartres and in fund-raising for the preservation of its unique stained-glass windows and sculptures. Eugene passed away on July 26, 2022, four days after celebrating his 99th birthday
