Stained-glass workshop at Rochambeau, March 17th 2025

Rochambeau’s 5ième students recently had the unique opportunity to explore the art od stained glass in a hands-on workshop organized by their art teacher, Kristine DeNinno with the guidance of glass artist Ladane Ebrahimian from VisArts, Rockville.

During the first of two sessions, Ladane introduced students to the intricate process of stained-glass creation – from selecting colors and textures to designing their own pieces. They learned the essential techniques such as glass-cutting, smoothing and layering copper foil, carefully assembling their designs on a cartoon, in preparation for the next steps: applying flux and soldering.

American Friends of Chartres provided historical and artistic context, sharing images of the stained-glass windows of Chartres Cathedral. Students discovered how this artistic tradition, which dates back to the early Middle Ages, continues to inspire modern-day creators.

With great care and creativity, the students set to work, each producing a unique and vibrant design. This workshop was a wonderful fusion of artistic practice and historical appreciation, fostering both technical skills and a deeper understanding of this centuries-old craft!
