Lecture 3: Liberal Arts by Mike Klug

In the third lecture, Mike presents a medieval Renaissance. Contrary to the implied image of ‘the Dark Ages’, the rediscovery of Aristotelian thought and the proliferation of Cathedral schools marked an era of learning and knowledge. Chartres Cathedral school had many famous teachers who taught the seven liberal arts. So central were they to the Cathedral’s identity that they are to be seen on the West façade as female allegorical statues, each paired with Roman scholars.

Mike then turns to the Noah window to interpret symbols and metaphors from the iconography.
